Day 270: The Third Round of Chemo Starts Tonight
Last night I was able to get back to my normal 7 hours of sleep, clocking in at nearly 7.5 hours.
I got to the office this morning and walked right into 4 hours of meetings back-to-back with only a couple of minutes in between each - basically enough time to refill my water bottle and run to the restroom. But, once those meetings ended at 1:00p I had the rest of the afternoon to actually tackle work.
It was nice having a couple of hours to focus on getting through a number of things that needs to get done before I get onto a plane Sunday for Synergy.
Sometimes you just need to take a little bit of time to organize your thoughts, your to-do list and make sure that everything is running according to plan. I got to do that this afternoon which made me feel a lot better.
When I got back home I quickly changed and went next door to tackle yesterday’s WOD:
Warm-up
- Jump Rope – 2 minutes
- 10 – Glute Kickbacks
- 10 – Jumping Lunges
- 10 – Star Jumps
10 – Wide Pushups
Main set
- 4x400m run. Rest 2 minutes between runs.
- Alternating squats and burpees for 1 minute ON / 1 minute OFF x 15 minutes. (i.e. Do one minute of squats, rest one minute. Do one minute of burpees, rest one minute. Repeat for 15 minutes.)
Cool down
Stretch
I ran my fastest pace ever during the 400m runs with a pace of 7:30-8:00 mins/mi, getting faster with each round as my legs warmed up more.
I tend to run faster at shorter distances because I can tell myself that I only need to keep up that speed for a short period of time, such as the 2 mins it took me to run each 400m lap on the treadmill.
For the alternating squats and burpees section I decided to use a 12 lb medicine ball during the squats to make them even harder.
I ended up completing a total of 91 squats and 33 burpees during the 15 mins dictated by the workout.
It’s workouts like this that look easy when you first read them but then as you get into them, they destroy you (which I love).
After my workout Laura and I decided to go out for a mid-week date night since I won’t get to drink alcohol for the rest of the week and will be traveling from Sunday through Friday.
It was nice to escape the craziness that has been work this week and just spend time with her for a couple of hours.
As I type this update I have just taken my anti-nausea medication and in an hour I will start the third round of chemo.
As long as I don’t feel like a baseball bat hit me tomorrow morning then I plan on going into my office, even if friends and colleagues of mine who read this disagree. I won’t really know how I’ll feel until I wake up in the morning.
Though our neuro-oncologist said that however I felt the first time is how I should feel every time, I’m a bit hesitant about that. There are so many factors that contribute to how your body deals with medication, never mind a poison that you ingest to help fight the remnants of a brain tumor.
If something happens then I can always leave early but there is too much going on and also, after the last two rounds, I know how far I can push my body while still taking care of myself.
Once this round finishes up we will be 25% of the way through the chemo treatment which is exciting, though we still have 9 more months before we’ll be completely done.
