Day 231: Racking Up Nearly 22,000 Steps
Though it was wonderful to be back in my own bed last night, I didn’t fall asleep until nearly midnight and then had to deal with a psycho cat and a whimpering dog at 6:00a. Fortunately, I was able to fall back asleep until 7:00a but then I was up.
After taking care of Sasha and Darren I headed to the gym for my first Spartan workout since Tuesday.
Today was an endurance day as Saturdays typically are which meant the main set dictated 120 minutes of some combination of cardio.
I finished the warm-up which included 3 minutes of rope and 30 star jumps before jumping into the cardio.
Last Saturday I completed 80 minutes of cardio so I wanted to increase that to 90 minutes today.
It’s still 30 minutes shy of what the workout dictated but it still continued to push my overall endurance higher.
I ended up splitting that between 45 minutes on the bike followed by 45 minutes on the elliptical.
To keep my mind off of how long the workout was I focused on reading more of “Every Day I Fight.”
One of the chapters is dedicated to when Stuart Scott was awarded the Jimmy V Award during the ESPYs.
He talked about the 4 surgeries in 7 days he had just prior to the ESPYs and not even being sure that he would be able to attend - something that I remember reading about last year.
While reading the account I had to hold back tears because of how meaningful I have always found that acceptance speech to be even before this journey started for us.
One of the most meaningful quotes during his speech was:
“You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”
Whether I have cancer or not, who knows. I never get a straight answer from my doctors even though I have a neuro-oncologist and am on chemotherapy but that doesn’t stop me from trying to live my life to the fullest on a daily basis.
I try to inspire people even if it is just with a simple smile or a few words of encouragement. I do that because I believe it is what each us should do.
We all have hardships in our own lives but there is always someone who is going through something much harder and dealing with it with an even more positive attitude.
For example, I’d like to think that I have dealt with the past 7 months pretty well but I don’t know if I could have gone through what Stuart Scott had went through and been as resilient as he was.
Once I finished up at the gym I came back home and we went out for a short walk up the street to Starbucks for coffee. Usually we would drive but it was a beautiful day and a great opportunity to get some additional exercise in.
After enjoying the start to our morning we got ready and headed off to see “Get Hard” with Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell which was a hilarious movie.
It was such a perfect day outside that once the movie finished we decided to go play a round of mini-golf, something we haven’t done in years but is an activity that we really enjoy.
By the end of the mini-golf we realized how hot we were after being in the sun for a while so we retreated to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner, margaritas and March Madness.
From start to finish it has been a really fun Saturday and one in which I racked up nearly 22,000 steps! I’m looking forward to another great day tomorrow even though it will include running a handful of errands.
